6 Transitions

While transitions can establish a pronounced shift in tone or topic, they also clarify your given argument.  Use transitions when paragraph breaks and punctuation markers fail to identify a change in organization structure.

Transitions can identify:

• example
• cause and effect
• comparison
• elaboration
• clarification
• concession
• conclusion

Using transitions improperly can render your given argument indecipherable, so make sure to choose wisely.
