13 Scholarly Source Analysis

Use this exercise as prewriting for each of the entries in your annotated bibliography. Bring your worksheet to the Writing Center, along with a copy of the article you’re working on, if you need help!

1. Write out a bibliographic citation for the source, in APA style. Use the style manual to help you: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

2. What academic discipline does this author represent? How can you tell? What do you personally find valuable about this author’s perspective? (Note: you don’t have to agree with someone to find their perspective valuable.)

3. What seems to be the most significant idea, concept, or data that this author contributes to the larger conversation about the topic in question? What questions does it raise for you?

4. Identify 1-2 important points the author makes that you personally find compelling (you might be compelled to agree or disagree). Locate a specific quote for each important point. What does this quote explain or reveal about topic in question?

5. Has this article influenced you to form an opinion or change your perspective on something? Explain.

6. How does this source relate to your other sources, or to your project as a whole?
