Suicide has been described as a continuum that begins with suicidal thoughts. It is common for people to have thoughts and act out behaviors early on this continuum before attempting suicide or without ever attempting suicide. Remember, most suicidal people just want their pain to stop. You can reach out to a person at risk and intervene in many places on this continuum.
