Get a sense of how it sounds to have a conversation with a person at risk by reading this sample conversation between a student leader and Alice, a student.
Student Leader [Reviews with the student her reasons for concern]:
Alice, I have noticed that since you broke up with your girlfriend, you haven’t been going out with your friends, you haven’t been eating much, and you’ve been drinking a lot more.
Alice: [Nods sadly]
Student Leader [Empathizes and elaborates]:
It’s understandable that you are upset, but it seems as if you have been taking it really hard, is that right?
Alice: I’ll be okay.
Student Leader [Trusts her instincts, persists beyond the initial denial, and asks directly about suicide]:
Well, you really have been acting differently, and that is understandable, but I’m concerned about how bad this has been for you. Sometimes when people feel as bad as you do, they have thoughts of harming or killing themselves. Have you had thoughts of harming or killing yourself?
Alice: I can’t imagine living without her.
Student Leader [Offers help]:
I have some ideas about where you can get some help handling this without hurting yourself.
